Monroe County Baseball Teams Shine in District Championships

On Saturday, May 30, the baseball teams from Monroe, New Boston Huron, and St. Mary Catholic Central delivered stellar performances, each securing District titles in their respective divisions. Monroe triumphed in the Division 1 Tournament held in Saline, Huron dominated Division 2 at Airport, while SMCC clinched the Division 3 championship in Erie Mason.

In Saline, the Monroe Trojans, despite entering the tournament with a 17-17 record, surprised everyone by winning the District title. “We played really good today,” remarked first-year coach Greg Depew. “We did a lot of stuff outside of baseball, just to be a family. Today we played as a family. We fought together as a family.” Monroe began with an 8-5 semifinal victory over Belleville, powered by Cooper Robinson’s 12 strikeouts and strong contributions from Tavin Parkhurst, Asher Simmons, Carson Liedel, and Caden Pfeiffer. In the championship, they defeated Bedford 10-5, bolstered by solid pitching from Simmons and Landon Loveland, along with a notable offensive performance from Liedel and others.

Meanwhile, Huron showcased their prowess in Division 2, achieving a commanding 16-0 win over Summit Academy in the semifinals and following up with a 12-1 victory against Airport in the finals. Coach Phil Yancey praised his team’s hitting, noting, “The guys really started hitting the ball two weeks ago and they’ve been hitting it ever since.” Jackson Surma's performance on the mound and at the plate played a crucial role in their success.

In Division 3, St. Mary Catholic Central’s Steel Decatur put on a remarkable pitching display, holding Whiteford to just two runs in a 9-2 final. Coach Jared Janssen highlighted Decatur’s consistency throughout the season, stating, “Steel has done that all year.” The Falcons’ offense was equally impressive, with multiple players contributing to their scoring efforts.

In other District action, Milan fought hard but fell short against Tecumseh after a thrilling semifinal against Dundee, while Woodhaven defeated Gibraltar Carlson and went on to capture the Division 1 title at Southgate.
