Munster’s Tallamraju Claims State Tennis Singles Title, Jasper Dominates Doubles Again
INDIANAPOLIS — The IHSAA girls state tennis championships showcased remarkable talent this past Saturday, with Munster's Priyanka Tallamraju emerging as the singles champion and Jasper solidifying its dominance in doubles competition for the fourth consecutive year.
Jasper's senior Adaysha Smiley and sophomore Stella Knies triumphed in the doubles final, defeating Carmel’s Madison Littell and Gabby Hall in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), at Park Tudor. Their victory marks a continued legacy for the Wildcats in high school tennis. “We were good at the net. We played our game. We didn’t stray away from that,” Smiley stated, reflecting on their performance.
The duo had to navigate a challenging semifinal match earlier in the day against Silver Creek, where they won the first set 6-2 but faced a setback by losing the second set 5-7. They rallied in the decisive third set to win 6-1. Coach Scott Yarbrough praised their resilience and strategy during the finals, emphasizing their adherence to the planned formations and aggressive play that led to their success.
Meanwhile, Tallamraju faced a thrilling showdown in the singles final against Brebeuf Jesuit’s Chloe Wendowski. After winning the first set 6-0, she encountered a dip in momentum and lost the second set by the same score. However, the sophomore rallied in the third set, dominating 6-0 to clinch her first state title and become Munster's first singles champion since 2009. “The second set was tough, she just really stepped it up,” Tallamraju remarked, highlighting her determination to win.
Tallamraju's journey to the title has been marked by her impressive record, losing only one match in the last two years. Her relentless drive and strong work ethic have propelled her to a perfect 16-0 regular season record this year. Coach Patrick Spohr noted the importance of mental composure during the match, especially after losing the second set.
With these victories, both Munster and Jasper have solidified their places as formidable forces in Indiana high school tennis, leaving a lasting impression on the championship stage.
