Tarik Skubal Returns to Tigers Rotation After Elbow Surgery, Faces Tough Loss
Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal made his comeback on Saturday after undergoing elbow surgery on May 6, a procedure that followed months of discomfort and rehabilitation. Skubal, who had been experiencing persistent pain and inflammation in his elbow, felt a sudden sharp pain during a routine task at home, prompting him to consult with the team’s medical staff.
After a 38-day recovery period, Skubal returned to the mound against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field, where he pitched 4.2 innings. In this outing, he allowed three runs—two of which were earned—on five hits, striking out four batters and issuing no walks, but ultimately faced a 3-1 defeat.
As one of the most sought-after players ahead of the MLB trade deadline, Skubal has been the subject of numerous trade rumors, with teams like the Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers showing interest. His presence could significantly bolster a contender's chances of winning the World Series.
Skubal's only misstep in the game came from a pitch to Daniel Schneeman, who hit a two-run home run on an 0-2 count. This marked just the fifth time in Skubal's seven-year career that he had allowed a home run with no balls and two strikes, and only the seventh home run surrendered to a left-handed batter.
During Skubal's absence, the Tigers struggled with a record of 11-24. With his return to the rotation, the team, currently at 29-42, is hopeful that losing streaks will soon be a thing of the past, although speculation about his potential trade looms large.
