Nathaniel Brown to Take the Field for Germany Against Curacao

Germany's search for a left-back has reached a conclusion, with head coach Julian Nagelsmann announcing on Saturday night that Nathaniel Brown will be in the starting lineup for the match against Curacao. This position had seen competition between Brown and David Raum.

Brown has already showcased his skills in two friendlies prior to the World Cup, playing the full match against Finland and contributing 60 minutes against the United States. Despite having only five international caps, he joins a seasoned German squad as they prepare for the tournament.

The 22-year-old made a significant impact last season with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he scored four goals and provided four assists in the Bundesliga. This marks his second season as a regular starter for Frankfurt after transferring from 1. FC Nürnberg in 2024.

Initially, many anticipated Raum would claim the starting role. The RB Leipzig player has 37 caps and played all three matches during Germany's early exit at the 2022 World Cup. He also transitioned from backup to starter during the knockout rounds of the 2024 European Championship.

Reports suggest that Brown may be on the verge of joining Bayern Munich following the World Cup. Bayern's current left-back, Alphonso Davies, missed Canada's opening match against Bosnia due to ongoing injury problems.

Germany will face Curacao, the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup, on Sunday in their first Group E match, as Nagelsmann's team aims to begin the tournament on a positive note. The last time Germany won their opening World Cup match was in 2014, a year they ultimately triumphed in the tournament.
