Muskingum Valley-Licking County All-Star Football Game Showcases Diverse Talents and Team Spirit

FALLS TOWNSHIP — The annual All-Star football matchup between Muskingum Valley and Licking County has become a remarkable event, merging players eager to transition to college football with those preparing for their final high school game. In past years, the Most Valuable Players have often included individuals readying for military service or starting their own businesses. Crooksville lineman Jace Thompson exemplifies this spirit, balancing a job with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers during the day and training for the game at night.

This year's roster includes players like Thompson, who opted out of additional playing opportunities, and future College of Wooster teammates Logan Hupp and Landon Iden, both wide receivers. They are joined by fellow linemen Creed Hill (Sheridan) and Connor Young (Maysville), who have earned scholarships to Saginaw Valley and Rio Grande respectively. Additionally, Tri-Valley’s Ryan Lamonica, a standout in interceptions and a versatile athlete, will continue his football career at Muskingum.

The quick adaptation period for players and coaches, which is typically less than a week, has been facilitated by social media platforms like TikTok and X, helping foster camaraderie among the squad. “I’m really excited to play with this group of guys,” remarked Young, an All-East District Division IV selection. He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with former rivals on the field for a common goal.

The team recently benefited from a motivational talk by Whit Parks, a 76-year-old Hall of Fame coach who emphasized unity and teamwork. Parks, who previously coached Muskingum Valley's current head coach Chris Zemba, continues to inspire young athletes. Zemba, a prominent local business figure, echoed the importance of sportsmanship and responsibility, advising the players to make the most of their opportunities.

In addition to their football preparations, Hupp and Iden have formed a close bond, already practicing together for weeks before the game. With over 100 catches between them in their senior year, they look forward to sharing a room as freshmen. Their friendship has extended beyond football, with the two enjoying activities like golf together, showcasing the spirit of competition and camaraderie that defines this tradition.

“It’s been great to see how well we mesh together,” Hupp noted, reflecting on the positive atmosphere of their practices. Iden added that social media has helped bridge gaps, turning former rivals into teammates and friends, creating a dynamic that coaches appreciate. “It has been pretty sweet to watch as a coach,” Zemba concluded, highlighting the unique experience of the All-Star game.
