NFL and NBA Player Unions Express Support for College Sports Reform Legislation

The NFL Players Association and the National Basketball Players Association have jointly praised a new Senate bill aimed at reforming college sports. A letter from both unions, which was shared with The Associated Press on Tuesday by a source who wished to remain anonymous, commended the efforts of the Senate Commerce Committee leaders in advancing this important legislation.

In their communication, the unions voiced their support for the bill’s provisions that safeguard athletes' name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights, as well as those ensuring medical and healthcare benefits. “We encourage continued meaningful stakeholder engagement and negotiations to further strengthen the bill as it moves through Congress to ensure college athletes are protected and empowered,” the letter stated, addressing Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell.

The NFL also issued a statement backing the bipartisan proposal, emphasizing the significance of maintaining robust collegiate athletics for the future of American sports, including Olympic disciplines. The league affirmed its commitment to collaborating with Congress on the bill’s progression.

While Senators Cruz and Cantwell support the initiative, the road to Senate approval remains uncertain. They have characterized their bipartisan effort as the best opportunity for lasting reforms in college athletics, which requires a minimum of 60 votes to pass. The 111-page legislation, introduced on May 27, is still open to modifications.

Notably, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Big Ten have not endorsed the Protect College Sports Act in its current form, and some senators have raised concerns about its provisions. High-profile advocates, including former Alabama football coach Nick Saban, have testified in favor of the bill, which seeks to address the current college sports landscape where players can earn significant sums while transferring between institutions.
