Nick Van Exel Claims Shaquille O’Neal Would Dominate Nikola Jokic and Draymond Green
Former NBA player Nick Van Exel recently shared his thoughts on the challenges of guarding legendary center Shaquille O’Neal, asserting that neither Nikola Jokic nor Draymond Green would stand a chance against Shaq's dominance in the post. Van Exel emphasized the ease with which O’Neal could score against any defender, highlighting the different dynamics of guarding a player like Jokic, who is known for his shooting range.
In a candid discussion, Van Exel posed a question: "Would you want to guard a [expletive] who can score every time in a post or would you want to guard a [expletive] who is going to sometimes make a three-point shot on the perimeter?" He quickly pointed out that many players, including Zach Randolph and Tony Allen, would prefer to guard the shooter rather than the relentless inside presence of O’Neal.
He argued that O’Neal's ability to overpower defenders means that Jokic would require double teams to contain him, while Shaq could simply contest shots without needing to leave his man. Van Exel acknowledged Jokic's skill, stating, "Joker is cold," but reiterated that he wouldn't be able to match up with O’Neal effectively in the post.
Van Exel also remarked on the physical toll a series would take on Jokic, suggesting that as the games progress, his shooting could suffer. "If y'all win two games, game six, how what that jumper going to be looking like?" he asked, hinting at potential fatigue affecting Jokic's performance.
While praising Draymond Green as a strong defender, Van Exel concluded that even Green would struggle against the sheer force of Shaquille O’Neal. His comments have sparked discussions among fans and analysts about the challenges of defending one of the greatest centers in NBA history.
