North Carolina Moves Closer to College World Series Finals with Victory Over West Virginia

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — North Carolina edged closer to the College World Series finals with a 5-2 victory against West Virginia on Sunday night, thanks to Gavin Gallaher's pivotal two-run triple in the seventh inning. This win marked the first time the Tar Heels (52-12-1) have won their first two games in the CWS since 2006, putting them one step away from reaching the best-of-three championship series next weekend.

The Tar Heels will have a break until Wednesday, when they will face the winner of a Tuesday elimination matchup between West Virginia (46-16) and Troy. In the seventh inning, North Carolina capitalized on three unearned runs against West Virginia's Maxx Yehl, the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, breaking a 2-2 deadlock. The game was highlighted by the presence of country music star and North Carolina supporter Eric Church, who cheered from a suite.

With runners on first and second base, errors by West Virginia's Tyrus Hall and Brodie Kresser on ground balls set the stage for Gallaher, who drove a deep shot into the right-center gap, allowing the Tar Heels to take a 4-2 lead. Owen Hull then added to the score with a base hit that brought Gallaher home.

Earlier in the game, North Carolina's coach Scott Forbes had gathered the team for a meeting in the dugout, urging his players to relax and enjoy the moment. After a quiet sixth inning, the Tar Heels responded with renewed energy in the seventh, filling the night air with a sense of celebration at Charles Schwab Field.

As the game neared its conclusion, tension mounted in the ninth inning when reliever McDuffie (9-3) allowed a walk and a single, setting the stage for Ben Lumsden to represent the potential tying run. However, Caden Glauber, who had previously pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in a win over Mississippi, came in and struck out both Lumsden and Hall to secure his fifth save. Yehl (9-3) exited after facing just one batter in the eighth, finishing with eight hits allowed, one walk, and seven strikeouts.

This victory places North Carolina in an advantageous position as they aim to secure their spot in the finals of the prestigious tournament.
