NorthWood Secures Third Consecutive Sectional Title with Victory Over Fairfield

BENTON — NorthWood clinched the IHSAA Class 3A Fairfield Sectional 20 baseball championship on Monday, June 1, edging out Fairfield with a score of 6-2. The Panthers, led by coach Zach Benko, improved their season record to 18-12-1, while the Falcons, under coach Darin Kauffman, finished at 13-16. The win marks NorthWood's third straight sectional title and the 15th in the program's history.

The game saw a dramatic final inning, as Fairfield had the bases loaded with no outs in the seventh. Relief pitcher Ean Bogan, a junior left-hander, entered the game in a crucial situation and managed to strike out one batter, induce a line-out to left field, and then a comeback to the mound to escape the jam. Starter Drew Rains, who pitched six innings and recorded seven strikeouts, was credited with the victory despite not having his best performance. "He just continued to battle and compete. I’m proud of his performance," said Benko.

NorthWood's offense struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Bogan, Sade Yoder, Finley Miller, and Brody Rondeau all reached base and later scored. The Panthers extended their lead to 6-2 with a run in the sixth inning, highlighted by Bogan being hit by a pitch, advancing on a sacrifice, and scoring on a fielder’s choice.

Fairfield, who scored the first run of the game, showed resilience but ultimately left nine runners stranded, including a missed opportunity in the seventh. Kauffman noted, "We put pressure on them every time," and expressed motivation for next year despite losing six seniors. The Falcons had some strong moments but fell short, finishing with four hits and two errors.

NorthWood will now advance to a regional matchup against the Highland Sectional winner on Saturday, June 6, at a location yet to be determined by the IHSAA.
