Oak Hills and Harrison Secure Spots in Regional Finals of OHSAA Baseball Playoffs
The Ohio High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs continued on June 3, with several teams advancing closer to the state tournament. In Division I, St. Xavier and Elder faced off in the Region 4 semifinals, while Mason battled Oak Hills. Moeller played against Centerville in the Region 3 finals. Meanwhile, Division II featured Anderson and Worthington Kilbourne in the Region 8 semifinals, alongside Loveland and Harrison.
In an exciting matchup, Oak Hills junior Luke Wardwell showcased a stellar performance with three hits and six RBIs, leading his team to an 11-5 victory over Mason in the Division I, Region 4 semifinal. With this win, Oak Hills (23-7) stands just one game away from claiming its first regional championship since 1981. They overcame two previous losses to Mason (19-11), which had secured the Greater Miami Conference title ahead of them.
The Highlanders rallied from an early 4-1 deficit, scoring ten runs in the last three innings. Wardwell, who had been struggling with a .266 batting average, stepped up when it mattered most, driving in six runs during the critical final innings. The anticipated pitching duel between Mason’s Ben Hanley, a Kent State commit, and Oak Hills’ Drew Murphy, a University of Cincinnati commit, did not fully materialize as both pitchers exited after five innings with Mason holding a narrow 5-4 lead.
Oak Hills took an early lead in the second inning, but Mason responded with a strong offensive showing in the third to take the lead. However, the tide turned when Oak Hills scored three runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh to secure their victory. Notably, Adam Williamson's relief pitching was crucial, as he pitched two scoreless innings to help maintain the lead.
In the Division II bracket, Harrison and Anderson are set for a rematch in the Region 8 final after both teams earned hard-fought victories. Anderson triumphed over Worthington Kilbourne, while Harrison edged past Loveland. The two squads previously met during the regular season, with Anderson winning 3-1. Their upcoming clash is scheduled for 5 p.m. on June 4.
