Oklahoma Sooners Gear Up for College World Series Challenge

The Oklahoma Sooners baseball team has been on a transformative journey this season, peaking at just the right time. In their second year competing in the SEC, they ended the regular season with a 36-22 record, including a conference mark of 14-16, under the leadership of head coach Skip Johnson, who is in his ninth year at the helm. While their conference performance raised concerns, the dynamics of college baseball often favor teams that gain momentum as the postseason approaches.

Having been predicted to finish last in the SEC by coaches in the preseason poll, the Sooners have defied expectations with a remarkable run to the College World Series. Despite a rocky end to the regular season, where they lost four consecutive series and struggled on the mound, the team found their rhythm just in time. Their postseason success began with a victory over Georgia Tech in the Atlanta Regional, followed by a commanding 13-2 win against Kansas in the Super Regional, marking their return to Omaha for the first time since 2022.

The resurgence of Oklahoma's pitching staff can be largely attributed to a duo of standout freshmen. Cord Rager, a left-handed pitcher, shone in the Super Regional's opening game, tossing six scoreless innings with only one hit allowed and six strikeouts. Throughout the season, Rager posted a 3-3 record and notched 61 strikeouts across 11 starts. His teammate, right-handed pitcher Xander Mercurius, has excelled in a dual role as both starter and reliever, highlighted by a career-high eight strikeouts against Georgia Tech in the regionals. Both pitchers have earned spots at the 2026 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp, underscoring their impressive performances.

Offensively, the Sooners have benefited from a mix of seasoned players and emerging stars. Deiten LaChance leads the team with 62 RBIs, while outfielder Dasan Harris has contributed significantly during the postseason. LaChance, who had not hit a home run in the first 31 games, has since blasted 15 in the last 29 games, making him a formidable presence in the lineup. Notably, Dayton Tockey's recent performances include a walk-off home run in the regionals and six homers in his last nine games, despite limited starts this season.

As they head into the College World Series, Oklahoma joins four other SEC teams in the eight-team bracket, facing stiff competition from No. 7 seed Alabama, No. 3 seed Georgia, and No. 6 seed Texas. Their previous record against Alabama and Texas was less than favorable, but the Sooners have already proven they can upset higher seeds, having taken down the tournament's No. 2 seed, Georgia Tech. With a significant drop in their ERA from 5.15 during the regular season to 3.33 in the postseason, Oklahoma's blend of youthful talent and newfound confidence positions them as a team to watch in Omaha.
