Options for the Tigers Following Jahmai Jones' Struggles

As June approaches, the Detroit Tigers find themselves grappling with the underperformance of designated hitter Jahmai Jones, whose earlier promise has diminished significantly this season. Jones, who excelled in 2025, taking over the role from Andy Ibáñez, has struggled to deliver consistent results, particularly against left-handed pitching.

In his previous season, Jones hit seven home runs and boasted a 159 wRC+ in 150 plate appearances, primarily against southpaws. However, this year, he has managed only two homers and a disappointing 35 wRC+ in just 86 plate appearances. With the Tigers desperate for improvements and a growing injury list, waiting for Jones to regain his form is no longer a viable option.

One potential solution could be calling up Trei Cruz, a switch-hitter who has demonstrated solid defensive versatility and could provide more options for a crowded roster. Not only does Cruz excel in center field, but he can also serve as a competent shortstop, potentially rendering current player Zack Short unnecessary. Although Cruz's offensive output may not significantly exceed that of current players, his speed and disciplined approach at the plate could inject some much-needed flexibility into the team.

Other alternatives include promoting outfielders like Ben Malgeri or Corey Julks from Triple-A. While Julks has shown promise with 11 home runs and an impressive OPS against left-handed pitchers this season, his lack of success at the major league level raises concerns. Malgeri, a homegrown talent, has also displayed solid stats but has a mixed track record that suggests he may not be the answer the Tigers desperately need.

If the Tigers decide to retain Jones a bit longer, they could explore options like designating Zack Short for assignment and utilizing Zach McKinstry as necessary, allowing for the possibility of recalling young prospects like Hao-Yu Lee or Max Anderson. Each option presents different risks and rewards, but the urgency to improve the team's performance is palpable as they navigate this critical juncture in the season.
