Ottumwa 641s Fastpitch Team Aiming for National Recognition

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa 641s fastpitch softball team is establishing itself as a dominant force in Iowa, with aspirations to achieve national acclaim by September. Recently, they secured their second championship of the season by winning the men's title at the North Starz Iowa Fast Pitch Tournament held in Dubuque.

Ranson Alik, the team’s sponsor, expressed the deep sense of pride that the squad, composed primarily of members from Ottumwa's Marshallese community, feels about their representation. "It's not for us. It's for this community," Alik stated. "The area code here is 641. That's why we named our team 641. We want people to know about Ottumwa when we show up for every tournament." He emphasized that playing softball holds significant meaning for the group.

Hailing from the Marshall Islands, the players are committed to using their success in fastpitch softball as a way to bring recognition to their new hometown. The North Starz tournament attracted teams from across the state, showcasing athletes and coaches from various Marshallese communities. "No one else in the tournament had ever heard of Ottumwa," Alik noted, adding that they often face questions about their city’s location.

The team consists of nearly 20 players and coaches, with ages ranging from their twenties to over forty. For many, the sport has fostered a sense of belonging and community far from their homeland. Alik shared, "We've got a couple of young guys that might have gone down a bad path. I told them to come with us and play some softball. They really enjoy everything. They're not focusing on the past." The team’s commitment to winning is intertwined with their dedication to uplifting their community.

During the tournament in Dubuque, the Ottumwa 641s triumphed in seven games, marking their first statewide title of the season. Looking ahead, they plan to compete in a national tournament in Arkansas from September 4-7, where they hope to showcase their skills against teams from across the country. "The main thing for us is that we want people to know that we've got a lot of great people from the island here playing this sport," Alik said. "We're undefeated here in town and all over Iowa, and hopefully we'll be the best team in Arkansas."

Alik also acknowledged the strong support from the local community, including Ottumwa Mayor Ben Foote, who expressed pride in the team's accomplishments. "He let us know how proud he was of us for representing the city," Alik shared. For those looking to support the team, more information is available on the Ottumwa Marshallese Unity page on Facebook, or they can contact Alik directly at 641-931-0154. Before heading to Arkansas, the team will participate in local tournaments, including the Keeva's HomeOne tournament set for June 26-27 in Cedar Falls.
