Packers Minicamp Highlights: Lukas Van Ness Shines Amidst Injury Concerns

The Green Bay Packers kicked off their mandatory minicamp on Tuesday at Ray Nitschke Field, showcasing their roster in front of the media. Notable observations and updates emerged from the practice session.

In terms of player availability, only Micah Parsons and Devonte Wyatt were unable to participate, while a total of 14 players were part of the rehab group, including three newcomers—Aaron Banks, Warren Brinson, and Javon Hargrave. The complete list of those in rehab includes Banks, Brinson, Drake Dabney, Kamal Hadden, Hargrave, Domani Jackson, Tucker Kraft, Isaiah McDuffie, Jacob Monk, Skyy Moore, Collin Oliver, Jordon Riley, Benjamin St-Juste, and Zach Tom. On a positive note, Donovan Jennings and Jonathan Ford returned to full practice after previously being in rehab.

With Banks sidelined, fifth-round draft pick Jager Burton took over as the starting left guard, building on his previous experience at right guard during OTAs. The offensive line lined up as Jordan Morgan, Jager Burton, Sean Rhyan, Anthony Belton, and Darian Kinnard from left to right. In injury updates, tight end Luke Musgrave appeared to sustain an issue during practice, leading to his early exit and leaving Josh Whyle to step in as the starting tight end. Whyle made an impressive catch in the red zone, securing a touchdown from quarterback Jordan Love.

The offensive skill positions saw Love at quarterback, Josh Jacobs at running back, Whyle and Messiah Swinson at tight end, and Christian Watson along with Matthew Golden at wide receiver. The second-team offensive line featured Brant Banks, Dillon Wade, John Williams, Karsen Barnhart, and Travis Glover. Although the offense initially struggled, Love found his rhythm during the red zone drills, connecting with Reed for a touchdown and Golden for a successful two-point conversion.

On the defensive side, the starters included Chris McClellan, Nazir Stackhouse, and Karl Brooks on the line, with Van Ness and Barryn Sorrell as the outside linebackers. The secondary featured Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine at cornerback, supported by safeties Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams. Van Ness stood out during practice, consistently disrupting plays and recording tackles for loss, while his fellow pass rushers, Brenton Cox Jr. and Dani Dennis-Sutton, also made their presence felt.

In special teams activities, rookie kicker Trey Smack rebounded from a previous tough performance, successfully making seven out of eight attempts, including long kicks from 51 and 58 yards. His only miss was a 40-yarder that veered left. Brandon Cisse and Bo Melton were noted as the first-team jammers on punt coverage.
