Packers Optimistic About Matthew Golden's Potential in His Second Season
As the Green Bay Packers gear up for the upcoming season, there is a palpable sense of excitement surrounding wide receiver Matthew Golden. Following a promising yet inconsistent rookie year, many believe Golden is poised for a breakout performance this season.
In a thrilling Wild Card playoff game against Chicago last January, Golden demonstrated his potential with a remarkable 23-yard touchdown run. After receiving a swing pass deep behind the line of scrimmage, he evaded multiple defenders, showcasing his agility and determination. “I wasn’t going to go down, man,” he stated. “I had the mindset of getting in the end zone regardless of who was in front of me.” This moment highlighted why the Packers selected him 23rd overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Despite finishing his rookie season with modest statistics—29 receptions for 361 yards and just one touchdown—Golden's contributions during key moments, including a significant fourth-down catch in Dallas, hinted at his untapped potential. Packers coach Matt LaFleur acknowledged Golden's speed, noting, “You can't coach 4.29,” referring to his impressive 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine.
Golden’s time at Texas further solidified his reputation as a playmaker, where he recorded 58 catches and nine touchdowns in 2024. As he prepares for his second year, teammates like Christian Watson and Jayden Reed have expressed confidence in his progress. “You can tell the game is slowing down for him,” Reed remarked, suggesting that Golden has become more comfortable and confident on the field.
With the departure of fellow wideouts Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks, Golden is expected to have more opportunities to shine in the Packers’ offense. “To be honest, I don’t feel like (people) have seen anything yet,” Golden said, brimming with confidence. As he looks ahead, his teammates and coaches are equally eager to see how his skills will evolve this season.
