Padres Capitalize on Reds' Bunt Mishaps for 6-2 Win

SAN DIEGO (AP) — In a dramatic turn of events, the San Diego Padres surged to a 6-2 victory on Monday night, thanks in large part to a series of errors by the Cincinnati Reds during the seventh inning. Gavin Sheets played a pivotal role, delivering a game-tying double before scoring the go-ahead run as the Reds struggled to handle three consecutive bunts.

Freddy Fermin continued his impressive form, hitting a home run for the third straight game and contributing two RBIs. The Padres, who have been grappling with offensive challenges, found a unique solution to their struggles, marking just their third win in 14 games.

After Sheets doubled to drive in Xander Bogaerts, Reds starter Andrew Abbott (4-4) was pulled from the game. San Diego's subsequent three batters attempted bunts against reliever Tejay Antone, but the Reds faltered, failing to field the bunts cleanly. Jase Bowen and Samad Taylor were credited with singles, and Sheets crossed the plate on what appeared to be a safety squeeze by Taylor.

Although Antone was charged with a fielding error on Fermin's bunt attempt, he managed to escape a bases-loaded situation with no outs. The recent call-ups, Bowen and Taylor, made significant contributions beyond the bunts, with Taylor hitting a two-run single in the eighth inning and Bowen recording two hits while also stealing the first two bases of his career. Taylor also played a crucial defensive role, throwing out Matt McLain at home plate in the second inning.

Abbott had a solid outing, allowing just four hits over six innings while striking out six, but the Reds have now lost five consecutive games and nine of their last eleven. Walker Buehler limited the Reds to one run despite allowing eight hits across 4 2/3 innings. Fermin’s home run in the third inning added to his unexpected power surge, having previously hit only 20 homers across five major league seasons.

The Reds took a brief lead in the sixth inning when Noelvi Marte’s single set up Edwin Arroyo's sacrifice fly against winning pitcher Adrian Morejon (5-1). Looking ahead, Lucas Giolito (2-1, 4.86 ERA) is set to make his second home appearance for the Padres on Tuesday night, facing Reds pitcher Chase Burns (7-1, 2.05 ERA), who has yet to allow more than two runs in any of his nine starts this season.
