Padres Designate Bryce Johnson for Assignment in Search of Offensive Boost

The San Diego Padres have officially designated outfielder Bryce Johnson for assignment as part of their efforts to revamp the roster and enhance offensive output from younger players. This decision, reported by AJ Eustace and Connor Byrne of MLBTradeRumors.com, comes as a surprise given Johnson's tenure with the team.

Johnson joined the Padres after being acquired from the San Francisco Giants on a minor league contract ahead of the 2024 season. Although he started last season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Padres reacquired him in a mid-April trade involving catcher Brett Sullivan. Known for his strong defensive skills, Johnson had a commendable offensive performance last year, boasting a slash line of .342/.383/.434.

However, this season has proven challenging for Johnson, who is currently struggling significantly with a disappointing slash line of .178/.229/.222 and a strikeout rate of 36.7 percent. Despite making only 12 starts in 32 games, he has primarily been utilized as a defensive substitute. The Padres are facing additional challenges with the recent loss of outfielder Ramon Laureano to a season-ending hip injury and the release of bench player Nick Castellanos.

In light of these changes, the team is looking to inject more offensive energy through younger players like Samad Taylor and Jase Bowen, both of whom have been promoted from the minors. Their approach has already revitalized the squad, providing the offense that has been sorely needed. Johnson, now 30, is in DFA limbo for up to a week, during which the Padres will explore potential trade options. His defensive capabilities and a modest salary of $850,000 could entice other teams to take a chance on him.

Currently, the Padres are relying on outfielders Fernando Tatís Jr., Jackson Merrill, and Gavin Sheets. While Sheets has emerged as a reliable power hitter, Tatís has adapted to a leadoff role that focuses more on contact than homers. Merrill, on the other hand, is enduring a tough stretch, leaving the team hopeful for his resurgence.
