Padres Fall Short Again as Phillies Surge Late with Home Runs
The San Diego Padres faced another setback on Wednesday night, succumbing to the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park. Despite breaking through against Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sánchez, who had a scoreless streak of 50 2/3 innings, the Padres found themselves undone by two crucial home runs in the seventh inning.
Reliever Jason Adam surrendered solo shots to J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber, sealing the Padres' fate as they dropped their fifth consecutive game to the Phillies this season. The loss dropped San Diego's record to 32-28.
Jackson Merrill ended Sánchez's impressive streak with a single that brought Ty France home, who had earlier doubled to keep the inning alive. “Are we in the movie ‘Groundhog Day’ right now? Two games that mirrored the last two days in Philly,” remarked Padres manager Craig Stammen, noting the similarities in the teams' struggles. “They’re just getting a few more home runs when they’re playing against us, so we’ve got to figure out how to match ‘em and bring our A game tomorrow.”
In the eighth inning, Xander Bogaerts managed to score after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, following singles from Fernando Tatis Jr. and Miguel Andujar, along with a walk drawn by Gavin Sheets. However, the Padres were unable to capitalize further, leaving seven runners stranded during the game.
Walker Buehler pitched effectively for San Diego, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out four. That lone run came in the fifth inning when Bryson Stott's double set up Adolis García's deep double, giving the Phillies an early lead. Wandy Peralta closed out the seventh for Adam and pitched a solid eighth, but the Padres' offense could not support the effort.
The series finale will feature Lucas Giolito (2-0, 4.97 ERA) on the mound for the Padres, facing off against Phillies righty Zach Wheeler (4-1, 2.17 ERA), who had a stellar stretch prior to his last outing. The game is set to begin at 10:05 a.m. PT.
