Padres Outfielder Ramón Laureano Undergoes Hip Surgery, Season in Jeopardy
The San Diego Padres are facing yet another setback as left fielder Ramón Laureano has undergone surgery on his right hip, effectively ending his season. Initially placed on the injured list earlier this week, it was thought the move was precautionary, but the situation has since taken a serious turn. Laureano is expected to be sidelined for approximately four to five months, leaving his return contingent on a potential postseason run for the team.
Laureano's time with the Padres had been marked by inconsistency. Acquired in a significant trade with the Baltimore Orioles, he was enjoying a strong season in Baltimore, hitting .290 with a .529 slugging percentage. However, after joining San Diego, he hit nine home runs in just 50 games. Unfortunately, a fractured finger prevented him from participating in the Wild Card series against the Chicago Cubs.
At the start of the 2026 season, Laureano was one of the few bright spots for the Padres, boasting a solid batting average of .308 through the first week. However, his performance quickly declined, and he ended with a disappointing .203 average over 53 games. This statistic may now stand as his final mark with the team, as the hip surgery has cut his season short.
The Padres have struggled offensively, and Laureano's absence is a significant blow. As he moves from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day list, the team has called up young prospect Jase Bowen, who has had a rough start in the majors. With injuries already ravaging the pitching staff, the Padres are in a critical phase, needing to find a way to turn their fortunes around before it’s too late.
