Panthers Coach Dave Canales Discusses Recent Health Concern at Minicamp
On Tuesday afternoon, following the initial practice of the Carolina Panthers' mandatory minicamp, head coach Dave Canales disclosed that he had recently undergone surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. The 45-year-old coach appeared with a bandage on the left side of his nose as he addressed the media about his health.
Canales shared that the condition was identified during a routine skin cancer screening two months prior. "It's a good reminder not to take these things for granted," he said, according to the Associated Press. He expressed gratitude that the cancerous spot was successfully removed, adding, "They were able to get it off. So I'm really appreciative."
In his remarks, Canales encouraged others to prioritize sun safety and regular screenings. "So this is my opportunity to say go get screened," he urged. "This is something that can be caught and detected early; they took care of it and took care of me, so I'm really appreciative of them." He also shared a personal connection to the issue, noting that his mother had a similar experience with skin cancer in her 40s, which reinforced his commitment to sun protection.
Basal cell carcinoma is the most prevalent form of skin cancer, with approximately 3.6 million new cases diagnosed annually in the United States, according to The Skin Cancer Foundation. Canales’ experience serves as a vital reminder for everyone to stay vigilant about their skin health.
