Paul Skenes Finds Clarity at Little League Field Amid Struggles

PITTSBURGH (AP) — On a rare day off during the season, Paul Skenes found himself driving through the suburbs of northern Pittsburgh when he spotted the inviting lights of a baseball field. Without much thought, he circled the parking lot until he secured a spot and soon became an unexpected visitor at Ingomar Little League, where young teams were practicing.

The 24-year-old Pirates pitcher, who stands at an imposing 6-foot-6 and weighs 260 pounds, attempted to blend in, a challenge when you're one of baseball's emerging stars. Dressed casually in sandals, a T-shirt, and shorts, Skenes clearly hadn’t intended to make this stop. Over the next two hours, he engaged with the young players, tossing around a ball and signing autographs, reminiscing about a time when his own connection with baseball was uncomplicated.

The spontaneous event quickly gained traction on social media, particularly after his girlfriend, former gymnast and current influencer Livvy Dunne, posted about it on TikTok. A local Pittsburgh DJ also shared the moment on Instagram. Acknowledging the attention that often follows him, Skenes humorously remarked, “Should’ve worn some sunglasses and a fake moustache.”

Being just north of PNC Park, the Little League field holds a special significance for Skenes. He recalled how Los Angeles Angels outfielder Garrett Anderson had inspired him during his childhood in Southern California. Yet, as the Pirates face a four-game losing streak, the outing served as a reminder of why he loves the game. “I went to watch some baseball, but you got to remember it’s just a game,” he reflected. “There’s a lot of things that make it a business. It’s work. It’s a job for us, for sure, on some days more than others.”

Despite limiting the Dodgers to just two runs over six innings during his last start, Skenes has been winless in his past five outings, with a current ERA of 4.50 since mid-May. Although he noted that his fastball looked sharper against the Dodgers, he remains focused on maintaining perspective throughout the long season. “Just a good day, I think,” he said about his performance. “The game looks different when it’s 200-foot fences and there are no ads out there, no fans out there, just playing for the love of the game.”
