Pearl River and Dobbs Ferry Secure Spots in Softball State Finals

Pearl River and Dobbs Ferry are set to represent Section 1 at the NYSPHSAA Championships, taking place at Green Light Networks Grand Slam Park in Binghamton. Both teams have advanced to the state semifinals in their respective divisions and aim for victory to reach the championship match on June 13.

In the Class A semifinal, Pearl River staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Wantagh (Section 8) with a score of 5-4. Coach Chris Woolgar praised his team’s determination, stating, “Whatever it takes!” The Pirates secured their spot in the finals with a dramatic seventh-inning rally, showcasing their trademark grit and resilience.

With the game tied in the final inning, Bella Caparrelli delivered the winning hit, emphasizing the hard work the team has put in this season. "It means the world," she said. "We've all put in a lot of work... I think this is something we can achieve." The Pirates, seeking their first state title since 2010, capitalized on a leadoff double from Cait Murphy, followed by an error that allowed Murphy to score the tying run, setting the stage for Caparrelli's decisive single.

Pearl River will face Averill Park from Section 2 in the state final on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Green Light Networks Grand Slam Park. Wantagh concluded its season with an impressive record of 18-7, having won its first Section 8 title since 1990.

The Pirates initially led 3-0 but fell behind as Wantagh rallied to take a 4-3 lead. Freshman pitcher Ashlyn Ryan delivered a strong performance, allowing only one earned run and striking out three batters. "She's a fighter," Woolgar noted, praising her composure under pressure.

In a standout performance, Taylor Donnelly shone in the center field, contributing greatly to the team's defense and helping secure the win. As the Pirates prepare for their final match, Donnelly stated, "Continue doing what we're doing... Be very confident, put the ball in play and score some runs."
