Penguins Eye Youth Movement in Goaltending for Upcoming Season
The Pittsburgh Penguins are gearing up for the offseason with significant decisions looming in their goaltending department. A promising young talent, Sergei Murashov, has caught the eye of the organization after a standout performance in the AHL this past season.
According to Penguins insider Josh Yohe from The Athletic, there is a strong belief within the team that the 22-year-old Murashov is poised to secure a full-time position in the NHL next season. Yohe also indicated that Arturs Silovs, a restricted free agent, is expected to return and form a goaltending duo with Murashov.
“I anticipate the Penguins bringing restricted free agent Arturs Silovs back to Pittsburgh next season,” Yohe noted in a June 15 article. “He had his ups and downs, but the way he played in the final three games of the postseason made him some fans within the organization.” Silovs, 25, is appreciated for his quirky personality and positive rapport in the locker room, which may aid him in teaming up with Murashov.
Additionally, 24-year-old Joel Blomqvist remains in consideration for the upcoming season. Though he may not be as flashy as Murashov, Yohe highlighted his solid performance with a 2.40 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage during the regular season in Wilkes-Barre. “The Penguins are high on Blomqvist, who is only 24. They simply like Murashov a little more,” Yohe added.
The trend seems clear: the Penguins are embracing a youthful strategy in net as they prepare for the next season.
