Penn Softball Triumphs Over Elkhart; John Glenn Claims First IHSAA Regional Title

ELKHART — Penn High School's softball team showcased its championship spirit once again on Tuesday evening, achieving a remarkable 11-2 victory against Elkhart to secure their twelfth consecutive regional title. The Class 4A No. 3 Kingsmen have now solidified their status as record-holders in regional title wins, continuing their impressive season with a 28-3 record.

Leading the charge for Penn were standout players Carson Petty and Charlie Swiger, who played crucial roles in the team’s success. This victory marks the third time this season that Penn has triumphed over Elkhart. With their eleventh consecutive win, the Kingsmen are set to face the top-ranked Lake Central (28-2) in the Harrison Semi-state semifinal this Saturday, June 6, at 11 a.m.

Penn has a history with Lake Central, having suffered a 14-0 defeat earlier in the season, but they showed promise in a previous matchup where they led before inclement weather interrupted the game. Coach Beth Zachary praised her team, stating, "This is just a reflection of the culture that we have built here," emphasizing the importance of their legacy and commitment to the game.

The Kingsmen started strong against Elkhart, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning and extending their advantage throughout the game. Swiger contributed significantly with four hits, while Petty reached base four times, setting the tone early on. Although Elkhart managed to score two runs in the sixth inning, it wasn't enough to change the outcome, as Penn continued to assert their dominance on the field.

In another notable achievement, John Glenn High School captured its first-ever Class 3A regional title by edging out Tippecanoe Valley 1-0. Payton Thomas delivered the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, while Mia Wilton stood out as a key player, going 3-for-3. With a record of 21-9, Glenn will face East Noble (22-3) in a semi-state matchup this Saturday at Twin Lakes High School in Monticello.

Both teams are poised for their upcoming challenges, with Penn aiming to continue their championship legacy and Glenn pursuing their inaugural title in the semi-state competition.
