Phillies Squeak Past Padres Again, But Offense Needs Boost
PHILADELPHIA – In a tense matchup at Citizens Bank Park, the Philadelphia Phillies managed to edge out the San Diego Padres with a narrow 3-2 victory. The game featured a pivotal moment when Padres first baseman Gavin Sheets hit a two-out, two-run homer in the third inning, raising concerns among the crowd of 38,763 about the Phillies' ability to rebound.
Entering this three-game series, the Phillies had struggled offensively, failing to score more than four runs in their last 11 games. Despite their offensive woes, they had secured four wins out of six against the Padres and Dodgers in their previous series, largely due to impressive pitching and timely hits.
“I don’t think over the course of the season it’s super sustainable,” said Bryce Harper, who played a key role in the game. He acknowledged the team's recent successes but emphasized the need for improved offensive output. The Phillies are currently tied for last in the National League for on-base percentage and are near the bottom in batting average and OPS.
Despite the offensive struggles, the Phillies' pitching remained strong. Aaron Nola, the starting pitcher, delivered an impressive five innings, allowing just four hits while striking out eight batters and not issuing any walks. “Aaron kind of set the tone,” noted interim manager Don Mattingly.
Relievers Jose Alvarado, Orion Kerkering, Brad Keller, and Jhoan Duran followed suit, each contributing a scoreless inning, with Duran achieving his 13th save by striking out the side. The offense, while limited to nine hits—its highest total in a nine-inning game since May 10—was led by Harper and Brandon Marsh, who has been enjoying a stellar season.
Harper responded to Sheets’ homer with a blast of his own, driving in Trea Turner, and later scored the go-ahead run after a double play. Alec Bohm made a crucial defensive play to seal the win, managing to catch Fernando Tatis off guard in a rundown. “A lot of good stuff,” Mattingly said, reflecting on the team’s performance.
While the Phillies secured another win, the urgency for an offensive resurgence remains evident as they continue their homestand.
