Pine Bush Softball Stages Remarkable Comeback to Secure State Semifinal Win
Pine Bush, the champions of Section 9 Class AAA softball, proved that a little rain can do wonders for their team spirit as they mounted a thrilling comeback to defeat Suffolk County's Massapequa, 7-2, in a state semifinal held at Grand Slam Park in Binghamton. Following a lengthy rain and lightning delay of over two hours, the Bushmen surged offensively, scoring six runs in the sixth inning.
With this victory, Pine Bush (19-3) is set to compete in the state finals on Saturday, where they will face Lancaster, the Section 6 champion from Western New York, who triumphed over Saratoga Springs in their semifinal matchup.
The turning point came during the sixth inning when Pine Bush, trailing 2-1 and after two quick outs, began to find their rhythm against Massapequa's ace pitcher, Alexa O'Mallon. The innings started briskly, with both pitchers demonstrating strong performances, but the Bushmen broke through with key hits from Ava Boffalo, Silvana Zamonsky, and Autumn Gove, loading the bases. Payton Croce then delivered a decisive hit, clearing the bases with a drive to right-center.
Avery Ogden followed up with a crucial RBI double, and Emma Boffalo capped off the scoring spree with a two-run homer to left field, pushing the Bushmen ahead 7-2. Earlier in the game, Pine Bush had responded quickly after falling behind, with Silvana Zamonsky driving in a run after a clever bunt play by Courtney Flynn.
The Bushmen's resilience and late-inning offensive explosion highlighted their potential as they look forward to the finals, where they aim to capture the state championship title.
