Pirates Explore Internal Bullpen Solutions Amid Struggles
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to face significant challenges with their bullpen, a recurring issue that was highlighted once again during their recent matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers at PNC Park on Tuesday night. Despite a solid six-inning performance from Paul Skenes, who left the game with a 2-2 tie, the Pirates suffered a heavy defeat, allowing 10 runs in the seventh inning and losing 12-3. This marked the team's fourth consecutive loss.
The 10 runs scored by the Dodgers in that inning represent the highest number the Pirates have conceded in a single frame since the Cincinnati Reds achieved double digits in July 2019. Rookie Wilber Dotel, who has shown promise as a reliever this season, struggled significantly, failing to retire any of the six batters he faced. Brandan Bidios, another first-year pitcher, also had a tough outing, recording more walks (three) than outs (two), ultimately leading to Dennis Santana stepping in to finish the inning. Dotel's performance resulted in six earned runs, while Bidios was charged with four runs (one earned).
With their current bullpen issues contributing to a 34-33 record, the Pirates find themselves ranked 19th in Major League Baseball and 12th in the National League with a 4.33 ERA among relievers. To address these struggles, general manager Ben Cherington may need to consider internal options for reinforcements, especially as trade possibilities remain uncertain.
Here are four players from Triple-A Indianapolis who could be promoted to bolster the bullpen:
RHP Isaac Mattson began the season with the Pirates, notching a 4.12 ERA in 21 games before being optioned on May 20. Since then, he has excelled with a 2.35 ERA in eight appearances, totaling 7.2 innings with two runs allowed and eight strikeouts. After a successful previous season, it may be time for the Pirates to revisit Mattson's potential.
RHP Antwone Kelly, ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the organization by MLB Pipeline, was named the Triple-A pitcher of the month for May. After a slow start, he has improved significantly, going 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA in five May starts, followed by five scoreless innings in two June relief appearances. Kelly has been added to the Pirates' 40-man roster, which could facilitate his promotion.
RHP Justin Meis has been performing well at Indianapolis, boasting a 3.00 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP over 18 relief outings. In his last eight games, Meis has a remarkable 0.87 ERA, making him a strong candidate for elevation to the major league team. Notably, he is a local product, having graduated from Bethel Park High School and was drafted by the Pirates in 2021.
RHP Beau Burrows, who is not on the 40-man roster, has also impressed with a 2.55 ERA and three saves in 20 appearances for Indianapolis. With a career spanning 11 appearances in the majors, Burrows may seek to reclaim his spot in the big leagues after a solid showing at the Triple-A level.
