Pochettino Addresses Pulisic Injury Concerns Following Paraguay Victory
Mauricio Pochettino swiftly addressed worries regarding Christian Pulisic after the U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) triumphed over Paraguay in their World Cup opener. The match, held at SoFi Stadium, marked the beginning of Group D play, with the U.S. securing a decisive 4-1 victory.
Despite the strong performance, Pulisic’s early exit from the game raised eyebrows, particularly given his importance as the team’s captain and top offensive threat. According to reports by Tom Bogert, Pochettino informed FOX Sports that Pulisic had sustained a calf injury and was feeling tightness, prompting the decision to substitute him to avoid any potential risks. “Pulisic took a kick in his calf and then he started to feel tight and we didn’t want to take any risk,” Pochettino explained.
Further easing concerns, Pochettino noted that while the injury made it challenging for Pulisic to continue, the initial assessment did not indicate a severe issue. “It was difficult for him to work but we hope that it is not a big issue and he’s ready for the next one,” he added. Pulisic himself reassured fans, stating that he was withdrawn as a precautionary measure, emphasizing the importance of managing player health during the tournament.
The U.S. displayed a commanding performance against Paraguay, with Damián Bobadilla scoring an early own goal, followed by two strikes from Folarin Balogun and a late goal from Gio Reyna. However, the lingering question of Pulisic's fitness remains critical as they prepare for their next match against Australia in Seattle. The team is hopeful that the calf issue is minor, allowing Pulisic to continue playing a pivotal role in their World Cup campaign.
