PWHL Detroit Secures Third Overall Pick in Upcoming Draft
PWHL Detroit has positioned itself well for the upcoming draft, set to take place at the Fox Theater on Wednesday. The league announced the draft order on Monday, confirming that Detroit will select third overall in each of the six rounds. The Vancouver Goldeneyes will lead the draft, having secured the first pick after finishing atop the PWHL's 'Gold Plan' standings, while the Seattle Torrent will choose second, coming off a last-place finish in the regular season.
The remaining four picks in the draft will be allocated to the league's expansion teams, which were determined through a randomized selection process involving all general managers. The complete draft order includes teams like the PWHL San Jose, PWHL Las Vegas, PWHL Hamilton, New York Sirens, Toronto Sceptres, Minnesota Frost, Boston Fleet, Ottawa Charge, and Montréal Victoire.
In addition to their top pick, Detroit will also have selections at No. 15 in the second round, No. 27 in the third, No. 39 in the fourth, No. 51 in the fifth, and No. 63 in the sixth round. Furthermore, the team has successfully filled its roster to the maximum limit of ten players following Phase 4 of the Expansion Player Distribution Process.
Recently, Detroit signed forward Ella Huber, who had an impressive rookie season with the Boston Fleet, recording eight points. The 24-year-old from Northfield, Illinois, was chosen 10th overall in the second round of the 2025 PWHL Draft after an outstanding collegiate career at the University of Minnesota, where she tallied 140 points in 157 games.
On Sunday, the team also signed defenseman Nina Jobst-Smith, a third-round pick by Vancouver in the same draft. Jobst-Smith, who recently made her Olympic debut representing Germany, scored the first goal of the tournament and has previously participated in five IIHF Women’s World Championships.
