PWHL Expansion Approaches Final Stages as Top Talent Remains Available

The expansion phase of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) is reaching a critical juncture. Starting at 12 PM EST on June 14, Phase 4 will kick off, leading to a rapid recruitment process for the league's four new teams. By the conclusion of this phase, each team is expected to secure 10 players.

PWHL Detroit is currently on the lookout for two additional players, likely focusing on a goaltender—possibly Kristen Campbell—and a defender. Meanwhile, PWHL San Jose also has two spots left to fill. They have already signed four forwards, three defenders, and a goalie, giving them flexibility to choose either two forwards or a mix of one forward and one defender as they seek to bolster their scoring capabilities.

PWHL Las Vegas is in need of three more players, predominantly aiming to add forwards, having already acquired four defenders and a starting goalie in Nicole Hensley. PWHL Hamilton, on the other hand, has the most work ahead of them, with four positions still to be filled. They are expected to seek a combination of forwards and defenders, as their goaltending is already addressed.

Several noteworthy players remain on the market, with Claire Thompson's ongoing presence suggesting a potential retirement, though no official announcement has been made. Vancouver's captain, Ashton Bell, stands out as a highly appealing defender due to her top pairing skills. Other notable free agents include Kendall Coyne Schofield and Tereza Vanisova, both of whom could significantly impact the teams desperate for offensive power.

As the clock ticks down to Phase 4, teams are poised to make decisive moves, aiming to assemble competitive rosters from a deep pool of talent that remains available.
