PWHL San Jose's Troy Ryan Highlights Key Players and Building Team Culture
The search for the emblematic figure of PWHL San Jose is underway, and General Manager and Head Coach Troy Ryan is eager to see which player resonates with fans and becomes a cherished member of the community. His top choice for this role is center Kristin O’Neill, who was also the team’s first Expansion Foundational Offer. O’Neill is recognized for her strong defensive skills and her experience as a silver medalist with Canada at the 2026 Olympics. "For those that know Kristen, just an unbelievable person, a great player, a great professional," Ryan remarked, expressing his belief that she will forge strong connections in the Bay Area.
Ryan noted that the excitement surrounding the new roster is palpable among fans in San Jose, particularly for the five players recently signed: O’Neill, goalie Corinne Schroeder, wingers Maddi Wheeler and Anne Cherkowski, and defenseman Rory Guilday. "I messaged a bunch of the players once the press release was announced for each initial signing, and I was really happy with the love that they’re already getting in that area," Ryan said, highlighting the community's enthusiasm for the new team.
As he reflects on the selections made during Phase 2 of the PWHL Expansion process, Ryan emphasized the importance of choosing players who are eager to be part of the San Jose team. "Good quality players, good quality people with good character that are excited about this," he explained. The next phase of player signings will commence on June 10, allowing San Jose to add three more athletes to their roster.
In discussing the team’s strategy, Ryan explained that he aimed to establish a solid foundation by acquiring key positions: a goalie, two defenders, and two forwards. He expressed particular enthusiasm about signing Schroeder, who has a robust track record as a starting goalie. "We’re confident that we can surround her with a great team that gives her a career-like year," he stated, indicating a commitment to building a competitive squad.
O’Neill shared her thoughts on Ryan’s leadership style, reflecting on her time playing for Team Canada. "I’ve always felt so valued, no matter what position I play," she said, underlining the importance of creating an inclusive culture. With her ties to the Bay Area and familiarity with her new teammates, O’Neill is eager to settle into her new role and enhance the team’s dynamic.
Wheeler also expressed her admiration for O’Neill, noting that her selection as the Expansion Foundational Offer underscores the culture Ryan aims to create. "Knowing how much Troy values the importance of leadership and culture... was really comforting," Wheeler remarked, reinforcing the team's collective vision going forward.
