Raúl Jiménez Shines in World Cup Debut After Overcoming Adversity
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Raúl Jiménez experienced a monumental moment in his World Cup career as he scored for Mexico in their opening match against South Africa, leading to a 2-0 victory. The 35-year-old striker was overcome with emotion as he celebrated his first-ever World Cup goal, a significant achievement considering his challenging journey since suffering a skull fracture during a match with Wolverhampton on November 29, 2020, which required emergency surgery.
Just two weeks after the life-threatening injury, Jiménez was back in training, showcasing his determination. Although he eventually recovered, he now wears protective headgear for the remainder of his playing days. Over the past few years, Jiménez has faced additional injuries and inconsistent performances, including a disappointing outing in the 2022 World Cup where he did not score, contributing to Mexico's failure to advance past the group stage for the first time since 1978.
One of Jiménez's most notable moments previously came during World Cup qualifying in 2014, when he executed a stunning bicycle kick against Panama, earning the title of CONCACAF Goal of the Year. However, he was a substitute during the actual tournament held in Brazil.
Mexico's head coach, Javier Aguirre, noted Jiménez's readiness for this World Cup, sharing, “I read an interview where he said this has to be his World Cup. I think he got off to a flying start. He had always been in someone else’s shadow, but today he is a starter for this team — and he has truly earned it.”
This year has been particularly tough for Jiménez, as he lost his father, Raúl Jiménez Vega, in March at the age of 62. His emotional state was evident when he scored for Fulham shortly after his father's passing. Aguirre remarked, “On top of that, he was dealing with a personal situation that may have given him extra motivation. And he even scored a goal. It was a perfect day for him.”
