Browns Coach Outlines Quarterback Strategy for Training Camp
During voluntary OTAs on May 21, Todd Monken, the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, expressed dissatisfaction with the team's quarterback performance. "We threw interceptions in 7-on-7 for God’s sakes. Who does that? There’s no pass rush. It was embarrassing," Monken remarked, highlighting a rocky start to the competitive dynamic between quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.
However, recent developments suggest both players have made significant progress over the past three weeks. On Thursday, Monken revealed that the Browns intend to divide practice reps between Watson and Sanders as training camp kicks off. The team has not yet determined a starter for the upcoming season opener, as Monken believes both quarterbacks have shown enough growth to warrant a chance in the preseason. "I’m convinced of it. I’d say it if I didn’t," he stated, emphasizing the need for competition as training intensifies.
The decision regarding how long to maintain this competition in training camp poses a challenge for the Browns. The more practice time that is shared between Watson and Sanders, the less opportunity there will be for the eventual starter to build chemistry with the first-team players ahead of the regular season. Earlier this week, Sanders remarked on the nature of the competition, stating, "I’m not a judge" when asked if he felt ahead of Watson. Instead, he is focused on his own development and gaining familiarity with the offensive scheme.
Both quarterbacks will need to enhance their performances, as their last appearances in a regular-season game for Cleveland fell short of expectations. As the Browns prepare for what they hope will be a successful season, all eyes will be on this pivotal quarterback battle.
