Record Crowd of Over 50,000 Attends Women's National Team Match in Fortaleza
The Brazilian Women’s National Team attracted an impressive turnout of 50,402 spectators for their match against the United States on Tuesday (9) at Arena Castelão in Fortaleza. This event not only exceeded the previous friendly match against Jamaica in June 2024, which drew 33,272 fans, but also marked one of the highest attendance figures for women's soccer in Brazil over the past two decades.
In comparison to club events, the largest crowd remains the 2024 Brasileirão final between Corinthians and São Paulo, which saw 44,529 attendees. However, international competitions still hold the record, with the Olympic semifinal between Brazil and Sweden at the Maracanã in August 2016 boasting 70,454 fans. The previous record for a women's soccer match in Brazil was set during the 2007 Pan American Games final, where 67,788 spectators watched Brazil face the U.S.
The Brazilian National Team was met with a warm welcome at Castelão, with fans entering the stadium at a rate of 500 per minute. Those already inside enjoyed a vibrant quadrilha performance and a musical show by singer Solange. Enthusiastic supporters created a special mosaic for Brazil's debut at the venue, complete with a banner displaying the names of all players and a “We will play together” display during the national anthem.
This match followed Brazil's recent victory against the U.S. in a friendly held in São Paulo on Saturday (6), where they came from behind to win 2-1. This win marked the second consecutive victory under coach Arthur Elias and the sixth in their history against the U.S., who currently hold the second position in the FIFA rankings.
Before the game commenced, CBF president Samir Xaud emphasized the significance of this match as a precursor to the upcoming World Cup. “We are very happy with the presence and support of the fans. This is a pre-World Cup, these are friendlies that will prepare us for the first title,” he stated. The team will have four more FIFA international windows to prepare ahead of the tournament.
