Red Sox Broadcaster Expresses Reluctance to Trade Key Relievers
As the Boston Red Sox continue to struggle, currently sitting 14 games under .500, discussions about potential trades are heating up. Notable names like Aroldis Chapman, Sonny Gray, and Jarren Duran have emerged as possible candidates to be moved before the August 3 trade deadline. The team’s performance has raised concerns about its future, prompting speculation about who might depart.
In addition to the aforementioned players, Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten are also under consideration for trades. However, Lou Merloni, a former utility player for the Red Sox and now a broadcaster, voiced a strong opinion against hastily letting go of these two relievers. He emphasized that he would not entertain offers unless they were compelling.
On the ITM Podcast, Merloni remarked, “That’s not a hard no that I’d have on Willson Contreras. I don’t want to move any of these guys. I’d love to bring Aroldis Chapman back for another year. I’d love to continue to have Whitlock out there, and Slaten.” He added that the bullpen can be unpredictable, referencing how the Minnesota Twins restructured their entire bullpen in recent times.
Merloni concluded by stating that any trade involving Whitlock would need to be substantial. “I’m certainly not dealing Whitlock for a couple of A-Ball players that are far away from the big leagues,” he said, underlining his cautious approach to potential trades.
These discussions come at a time when Boston fans are hoping for a turnaround in the team’s fortunes.
