Smokies Surge with Power Hitters, Cubs Minor League Recap
The Knoxville Smokies celebrated a strong performance, defeating the Chattanooga Lookouts 4-1 and reclaiming a tie for first place. The victory was powered by an impressive display of long balls in the fourth inning, where the Smokies hit three consecutive home runs.
Dawson Netz earned the win for the Smokies, allowing just one run on six hits across five innings, while striking out seven opponents. Erian Rodriguez followed with three scoreless innings, and Marino Santy closed the game, sealing the win with a double play after giving up a walk and a single.
In the pivotal fourth, Jefferson Rojas started the power surge with his 11th home run of the season, followed by catcher Owen Ayers, who hit his 12th. Center fielder Andy Garriola capped off the inning with his league-leading 13th homer. Despite only having three hits in the game, the Smokies drew six walks and benefited from a hit-by-pitch.
The Iowa Cubs, on the other hand, faced a tough loss against the Indianapolis Indians, falling 11-8. Will Sanders delivered a solid five-inning start, yielding just one run, but Yosver Zueleta struggled in relief, allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning. Jonathon Long and Chas McCormick both contributed with home runs, while every player in the lineup managed at least one hit.
Meanwhile, the South Bend Cubs endured a challenging doubleheader against the Ft. Wayne TinCaps, losing both games 4-3 and 5-2. Mason McGwire pitched well in the first game, but the bullpen faltered late, allowing the TinCaps to take the win. In the second game, Jostin Florentino’s strong outing was overshadowed by a rough sixth inning for reliever Brayden Spears.
As the teams continue their seasons, the Smokies are poised for a strong finish with three games left in the first half of the season.
