Red Sox Criticized for High Expectations on Young Star Roman Anthony
The Boston Red Sox are currently under intense scrutiny regarding their recent $130 million contract extension for Roman Anthony, who made his Major League Baseball debut in the previous season. This extension is set to extend through 2033, with a club option for an additional year in 2034.
Anthony's performance at the start of the 2026 season has raised concerns, especially as he has been sidelined since May due to a partially torn ligament in his right ring finger. Initially, Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy mischaracterized the injury as a "sprain" during an appearance on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show," but later acknowledged his error.
Former Red Sox pitcher Adam Ottavino has voiced his concerns about the franchise's expectations for Anthony during an episode of "Foul Territory." He believes the organization is placing unrealistic pressure on the 21-year-old player, especially considering the significant financial commitment involved. "You're asking him to be your Big Papi," Ottavino remarked, suggesting that the expectations set for Anthony to lead the team offensively are excessive for someone of his age and experience.
Ottavino further stated, "I do think that they kind of overdid it with Roman Anthony, expecting so much out of him to basically carry the ball club offensively." He acknowledges Anthony's potential as a superstar but emphasizes that expecting him to replicate the success of Red Sox legend David Ortiz is not practical. "That just doesn't seem realistic to me," he added, criticizing the overall strategy surrounding Anthony's role on the team.
As for Anthony's recovery, the timeline remains uncertain, with recent setbacks indicating he has yet to reach a point where he can swing a bat without experiencing pain.
