The Red Sox faced yet another setback at home, falling to the Texas Rangers with a final score of 6-4. The game began on a sour note, as Connelly Early allowed a home run on the very first pitch, setting a troubling tone for the evening. The Rangers quickly capitalized, scoring three more runs in the second inning after Early left a changeup vulnerable, extending their lead to 4-0.
Willson Contreras provided a glimmer of hope for Boston with a solo homer in the second, and the team managed to add another run later in the inning through a combination of walks and singles. However, the Red Sox could not maintain the momentum. In the fourth inning, the Rangers struck again, scoring two additional runs as Early surrendered a double that hit off the wall.
Despite the struggles of their starter, Boston's bullpen exhibited resilience, shutting out the Rangers for the remaining 4.1 innings. However, the offense was unable to break through against Nathan Eovaldi and a strong Rangers relief staff. Jacob Latz entered the game in the eighth inning and delivered a flawless performance, retiring all four batters he faced to secure his 11th save of the season.
The Red Sox will have a day off on Monday before they begin a three-game series against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park on Tuesday. The atmosphere at Fenway was vibrant, largely thanks to the spirited presence of the Tartan Army, who filled the stands with energy and enthusiasm throughout the game.
On a positive note, Willson Contreras shined with two home runs, making a case for an All-Star selection. Ryan Watson also stood out with two scoreless innings, helping to stabilize the game. Conversely, Connelly Early's continued struggles with home runs raise questions about his performance this season, as he has already surpassed 75 innings, nearing his career high.
