Reds Place De La Cruz on Injured List, Promote Top Prospect Arroyo
The Cincinnati Reds have placed shortstop Elly De La Cruz on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain, effective Monday, June 1. De La Cruz has been a standout player for the team, boasting a .280 batting average, and is tied for the most home runs and RBIs on the team, with 12 homers and 37 runs batted in.
In his last game, a 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves, De La Cruz went 2-for-2 but had to exit in the fifth inning because of his injury. In his absence, the Reds have called up 22-year-old infielder Edwin Arroyo from Triple-A Louisville. Arroyo has had an impressive season, hitting .323 with 11 home runs and 34 RBIs over 53 games.
Arroyo was recognized as the third-best prospect within the Reds organization by MLB.com prior to this promotion. Originally drafted by the Mariners in the second round of the 2021 draft, he joined the Reds in a trade involving pitcher Luis Castillo in 2022.
Additionally, the Reds announced the designation of right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte for assignment. Currently, the Reds hold a record of 30-28 as they prepare to face the Kansas City Royals (22-37) in a three-game series at Great American Ball Park starting Monday.
