Reese Chapman Expresses Confidence in Tennessee Baseball's Future Under Josh Elander
CHAPEL HILL, NC – Reese Chapman experienced the pinnacle of Tennessee baseball during his sophomore year, capturing a national championship. However, his senior season concluded on a disappointing note. The Vols, seeded No. 2 with a record of 38-22, faced elimination in the NCAA Tournament’s Chapel Hill Regional, suffering a narrow 5-4 defeat to No. 4 seed VCU (38-24) on May 30 at Boshamer Stadium. This marked a historic low for the program, as it was the first time they exited a regional without a win.
Despite the challenging end to the season, Chapman remains optimistic about the future of the program under new head coach Josh Elander. “I mean, he wants to win just as bad as we want to win,” Chapman stated. “I have full faith in this program. It’s going to be right back at the top. So I mean, that’s all Vol Nation needs to hear is that we have this guy in our corner.” Elander ascended to the head coach position after serving as an assistant under Tony Vitello, who was hired by the San Francisco Giants last October. His promotion was a decisive factor in Chapman’s decision to remain at Tennessee.
The season was a rollercoaster for the Vols, who began with a 4-8 record in SEC play. Throughout the ups and downs, Elander and his players highlighted Chapman’s leadership as crucial in maintaining team morale. “There’s a lot of ways I could go, but he’s just a winner, period,” Elander remarked about Chapman’s impact.
Chapman’s journey to the NCAA Tournament was not without its hurdles. Just before the SEC Tournament began, he suffered a facial fracture from a line drive during practice. Despite missing the team’s two SEC games, he was determined to return and did so, donning a protective cage on his helmet. In his first game back against ECU, he showcased his skills by throwing out a runner at home and later hitting a two-run homer in his final game, bringing his career total to 33 home runs. “I’m just thankful I’m sitting next to Reese Chapman,” Elander said, reflecting on Chapman’s resilience and performance.
