Remembering Mario Elie: The Legacy of the No. 17 Jersey with the Houston Rockets
The Houston Rockets have seen a wide array of players donning a total of 52 different jersey numbers since their inception in the 1967-68 season, with nearly 500 athletes representing the team over the years. In recognition of the rich history associated with these jerseys, Rockets Wire is diving into the stories behind each number and the players who wore them. This series highlights the significance of retired jerseys and the remarkable individuals who have left their mark on the franchise.
Today, we focus on Mario Elie, the second of eight players to wear the No. 17 jersey during his time with the Rockets from 1993 to 1999. Elie, who concluded his collegiate journey at American International College, was selected as the 160th pick in the 1985 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. However, his initial stint with the Bucks was short-lived, leading him to play in various leagues domestically and internationally before making his way to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1990.
After a brief period with the Golden State Warriors and a stint with the Portland Trail Blazers, Elie found a home with the Rockets in 1993. Throughout his tenure in Houston, he consistently wore the No. 17 jersey, averaging 9.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game. His contributions to the team were pivotal, and he ultimately moved on to the San Antonio Spurs in 1999.
Elie's journey reflects the resilience and dedication often seen in professional athletes, making him a noteworthy figure in Rockets history. Each jersey carries with it a story, and Elie's No. 17 is no exception.
