Riverheads' Sarah Piner Triumphs in Discus at State Track Championships
HARRISONBURG — Sarah Piner, a sophomore from Riverheads, made an impressive mark at the Virginia High School League Class 1 state track meet, clinching the gold medal in discus. On June 5, she launched her first throw of the competition, which ultimately secured her the top spot and set a new school record.
Entering the event, Piner was ranked second, trailing only Auburn's Allyson Harris, the reigning state champion. This season, Piner had already set a record with a throw of 119 feet 5 ½ inches. However, she surpassed that mark on her very first attempt, achieving a distance of 125 feet 3 ½ inches, a personal best by nearly six feet. Harris's best throw was 114 feet 9 ½ inches, placing her second to Piner.
“It feels pretty good,” Piner expressed after her victory. “I’m very thankful and blessed. I’m thankful for all my coaches, my teammates and everyone who’s pushed me through and supported me.” Piner noted that she approached her initial throw with a mindset of relaxation and trust in her training.
Having just started her throwing career last year, Piner initially struggled to reach longer distances, managing only around 75 feet as a freshman. However, under the guidance of her coach, Jeremy Heizer, she improved significantly. After transitioning to focus solely on discus this season, she found her rhythm and excelled, with her coach acknowledging that her dedication played a crucial role in her success.
Heizer remarked on Piner's potential, stating, “The sky’s the limit,” and highlighted how her early throw put pressure on her competitors, who were unable to match her distance. Looking ahead, Heizer believes Piner has a strong chance of winning multiple state championships. While Piner is focused on continuous improvement and team success, she remains optimistic about her potential for future victories.
This remarkable achievement underscores Piner's dedication and growth in her sport, setting the stage for an exciting future in track and field.
