Rockies Aim for Series Win Against Angels with Sugano on the Mound
May 27, 2026; Los Angeles, California - The Colorado Rockies, currently standing at 23 wins and 38 losses, will look to capitalize on their recent success as they face off against the Los Angeles Angels, who share the same record. In a thrilling opener, the Rockies managed to secure a narrow 9-8 victory, a feat described by manager Warren Schaeffer as “not a normal game,” yet he acknowledged, “but someone’s got to win that game.” This win was particularly noteworthy as it marked the first time since July 16, 2016, that the Rockies have triumphed on the road after trailing by three runs entering the eighth inning.
Additionally, the Rockies' victory featured four defensive errors, a rarity in franchise history, occurring for only the fifth time and the first since September 26, 2020. With this win under their belt, the Rockies are eager to claim the series against the Angels, especially considering their recent track record against them. Colorado has taken two out of three games in their last three series against Los Angeles, including two victories in Anaheim in July 2024 and another pair in Denver in June 2023.
On the mound for the Rockies will be Tomoyuki Sugano (菅野智之), making his 12th start of the season. The right-handed pitcher has recorded a 4.01 ERA over 58.1 innings, accumulating 31 strikeouts while walking 16 batters and allowing 11 home runs. Sugano boasts a 1.25 WHIP and is 1-0 with a solid 3.00 ERA in his previous two starts against the Angels, including one at Angels Stadium.
The Angels will counter with right-hander Grayson Rodriguez, who has struggled this season with a 7.53 ERA across 14.1 innings. Rodriguez has struck out 14 and given up eight walks along with two home runs, resulting in a 1.31 WHIP. Coincidentally, he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles, Sugano's former team, and made his MLB debut in 2023 before being traded to the Angels in November 2025, just after Sugano's signing with the Orioles.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 PM MDT. Fans can catch the action on Rockies TV or listen via KOA 850 AM/94.1 FM for English broadcasts and KNRV 1150 for Spanish. Join the discussion and share your thoughts as the Rockies aim to secure a series victory!
