Rodri Reflects on Career-Ending Fears During Grueling ACL Recovery
Manchester City midfielder Rodri has shared insights into the mental challenges he faced during his recovery from a serious ACL injury, revealing he questioned if he would ever return to professional football. The Spanish international, now preparing for the World Cup, expressed that he is “back, stronger than before.”
In September 2024, Rodri suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a 2-2 match against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. This setback initiated an arduous 18-month rehabilitation process, which included an early return at the FIFA Club World Cup, followed by complications with his hamstring and groin that hindered his progress. It wasn’t until the latter stages of last season that Rodri regained his full form.
Reflecting on his recovery, Rodri spoke to DAZN España, stating, “This is part of life. Not-so-good moments. You have to face it in the most positive way possible.” He acknowledged the emotional toll, confessing there were times he doubted whether he could return to his prior level of performance or even play again. “I felt very limited, a lot of pain,” he admitted, emphasizing the inner struggle he faced during his layoff.
Rodri’s return to peak form was crucial for Manchester City as they navigated a tight Premier League title race. His contributions in significant matches against teams like Arsenal and Chelsea were vital in keeping the championship hopes alive until the season's final weekend. Manager Pep Guardiola had predicted that by the time of the World Cup, Rodri would showcase his best self, a prediction that has proven accurate as he now stands as a key player for Spain.
As the tournament unfolds in North America, Rodri's focus remains on the competition, with discussions about his future at Manchester City expected to take place once the World Cup concludes.
