Roldan Urges Team to Embrace Tactical Savvy Ahead of World Cup Opener
Cristian Roldan emphasized the need for the United States men's national soccer team to adopt a more cunning approach as they prepare for their World Cup opener against Paraguay. The midfielder highlighted that the co-hosts can sometimes be "too honest" on the field, which could be a disadvantage in high-stakes matches.
The US team is set to kick off their campaign on Friday against a Paraguayan squad known for its experience and physical style of play. They are also in a group with tough competitors Australia and Turkey. After a recent friendly loss to Germany, head coach Mauricio Pochettino has called on his players to "learn to play right on the edge of the rules," a sentiment echoed by Roldan during a training session.
"I think that's one thing that we can get better at, for sure," Roldan stated. "Being a little bit more savvy, understanding that being too honest at times is probably too much of a fault for us." He stressed the importance of managing the game wisely, including taking strategic fouls and prolonging time on the ground when necessary.
The last match against Paraguay, a friendly in November, ended with a US victory but was marred by a brawl in stoppage time, underscoring the need for the team to adapt to the physicality of their opponents. Roldan noted, "Paraguay does a really good job of that," referring to their streetwise tactics.
At 31, Roldan brings considerable experience to the squad, having earned 47 caps since making his debut in 2017. While he may not start on Friday, he views himself as an enforcer who can inject energy and intensity into the team. "Being intense is what got me here, and I got to keep doing it," he said, emphasizing his commitment to supporting his teammates, whether on the field or from the sidelines.
