Rome Odunze Adjusts to "New Normal" Following Foot Injury
Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze is adapting to a changed reality with his left foot after suffering an injury that sidelined him for five games last season. His recent remarks regarding his recovery have raised concerns among fans and analysts alike.
Odunze explained, “It’s not from a standpoint that I’m like always in pain, but the way my foot broke, there’s calluses in there that creates a different type of foot structure with those bones — different things that kind of shifts things around.” He expressed that this new condition is something he is learning to navigate, stating, “So my new normal was kind of what I am going into. And I don’t think that’s anything that’s going to prohibit me or keep me from making plays.”
With the Bears trading veteran wideout DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills this offseason, Odunze's role in the offense has become even more critical. He had a promising rookie season, finishing with 54 receptions for 734 yards and three touchdowns, followed by 44 catches for 661 yards and six touchdowns in his second year.
Odunze emphasized his commitment to the team, saying, “For me, I just want to be the best receiver possible for this team. I feel like I provide many assets to do that, and I’m comfortable with a lot of the target share, as well as the other guys getting involved so we can be the best offense possible.”
Notably, the majority of Odunze's success last season came in the initial four games, where he recorded 20 receptions for 296 yards and five touchdowns. Reflecting on his injury, he said, “It was tough. Obviously, I was gearing up for a great season. I felt like I was on track to have that, and injuries are part of the game. Unfortunately, I feel like it affected me more than injuries have in the past.”
