Rumors Suggest Warriors May Pursue Reunion with Durant as Curry's Era Continues
The Golden State Warriors are still focused on building a competitive team around their veteran star, Stephen Curry, who is now 38 years old. As the franchise navigates the twilight of Curry's illustrious career, it's clear they have aspirations of clinching another championship before he retires. However, their offseason strategy needs to align with these goals if they aim to lift the Larry O’Brien trophy once more.
In an intriguing development, sports analyst Sean Deveney proposed the idea of bringing back Kevin Durant, a former teammate who enjoyed great success with the Warriors. Durant, a two-time NBA champion and the 2014 MVP, stands at 6-foot-11 and remains one of the league's most effective scorers. Deveney noted that while "Still one of the league’s best pure scorers, ... (Durant) is also a headache few teams want to employ," he could still be a valuable asset for Golden State.
The possibility of the Houston Rockets trading Durant seems unlikely, particularly since they acquired him as part of a historic seven-team trade with the intention of keeping him long-term. Nonetheless, the Warriors might consider leveraging Jimmy Butler along with several key role players to entice the Rockets to part ways with the superstar.
At 37, Durant may not be in his prime, but his scoring ability has remained impressive. He averaged 26.0 points per game during the regular season while shooting 52.0% from the field and 41.3% from three-point range over 78 games. Although a bone bruise limited his contributions in the playoffs, his overall health has not raised significant concerns.
A potential reunion between Durant and the Warriors, despite jokes about their ages, could bolster Golden State's standing in the competitive Western Conference significantly.
