Rutgers Football Slips to 56th in ESPN's College Football Future Power Rankings

PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY - In a recent analysis by ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, Rutgers University’s football program has been positioned at 56th in the College Football Future Power Rankings, a significant drop from last year’s ranking. This assessment considers the potential of college football teams leading into the 2027 season, with Notre Dame taking the top spot, followed by Ohio State and Texas.

Rittenberg’s evaluation of Rutgers is based on several critical factors, including quarterback prospects, the strength of the offensive and defensive lines, coaching staff stability, roster management, and overall star power. Notably, the Scarlet Knights have experienced a tumultuous off-season, impacting their future prospects.

One of the most pressing issues is the quarterback position, where Athan Kaliakmanis has departed after a strong senior year, culminating in 3,124 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. Rutgers is now facing a competition between Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan and AJ Surace, who has limited experience on the field. Both players, however, bring potential with multiple years of eligibility remaining.

The roster management situation is another area of concern. While Rutgers has successfully retained key players like running back Antwan Raymond and wide receiver KJ Duff, the team has also lost several contributors to the transfer portal, including wide receiver Ian Strong and starting offensive tackle Taj White. On the defensive side, cornerbacks Bo Mascoe and Jacobie Henderson have also left, although the team has made some promising acquisitions from the portal.

Rittenberg’s lower ranking for Rutgers reflects the uncertainties facing the program, primarily due to an unproven quarterback situation and a defensive lineup undergoing significant changes. As the team heads into the upcoming season, the hope remains that improved performances will lead to a better ranking in next year’s assessment.
