Saints' Caesars Superdome will soon be NFL's second-oldest stadium

Change is coming for the NFL. With the Chicago Bears leaving Soldier Field and the Kansas City Chiefs shuttering their time at Arrowhead Stadium, the New Orleans Saints will soon have the NFL's second-oldest home field at the Caesars Superdome.

On Friday, the Bears announced that they identified new stadium sites in both nearby Arlington, Ill. or Hammond, Ind. They aren't decided on which path to take but neither option keeps them in Chicago on the shore of Lake Michigan. That means the NFL's oldest stadium -- Soldier Field has been in use since 1924 -- is going to close its doors. Elsewhere in Kansas City, the Chiefs have already shared plans to jump the border from Missouri to a site across town in Kansas. Arrowhead Stadium opened three years before the Superdome debuted in 1975 but it'll soon be a thing of the past, too.

That means just one NFL stadium will have hosted games for longer than the Superdome: Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay's unique ownership structure makes it highly unlikely they'll make the same push for public funding to build a new stadium that other teams have leaned on. Once Soldier Field and Arrowhead Stadium are inactive, it'll put Lambeau Field (opened in 1957) and the Caesars Superdome (1975) on top of the charts. The next-oldest home field will be the Miami Dolphins' Hard Rock Stadium (1987).

So what does the future have in store for the Saints and New Orleans? They'll continue to play home games at the Caesars Superdome through at least 2035, with a series of five-year options potentially extending their commitment through 2055. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in renovations to modernize the facility and maintain its world-class reputation. On top of that, no stadium has hosted more Super Bowls than the Caesars Superdome (eight of them), and New Orleans is seen as favorites to win the 2031 game after being allowed to join the bidding process as a late entry. At a time when more teams are pulling up roots and ditching their historic home fields, it's good to see the Saints have found stability.
