Schumacher's Determination Leads Campbell County to 10th Region Championship Game
Tyler Schumacher has established himself as not just the premier pitcher in the 10th Region, but also one of its fiercest competitors. The senior ace played a pivotal role in Campbell County's 8-0 victory over George Rogers Clark in the semifinals of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's 10th Region Tournament, showcasing his resilience on the mound.
The game took place on May 30 at Bishop Brossart's off-campus athletic facility, propelling Campbell County (24-13) into the regional finals against Montgomery County (30-7) scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 31. With this victory, the Camels are vying for their first regional title since 2022. Reflecting on the game, Schumacher stated, “It means a lot. Because last year, we thought we should have won it, and we lost in the semifinals. So it's great getting back and winning this time.”
In a standout performance, Schumacher gave up just two hits, issued three walks, and struck out 10 batters, bringing his season total to 107 strikeouts over 63 innings. With an impressive record of 8-1 and a reduced ERA of 1.16, he remarked, “My fastball was working. As the game goes on, I just start throwing harder and getting into my groove. You got to hit it, so I’m going to throw it and make you hit it.”
Coach Scott Schweitzer praised Schumacher’s consistency, saying, “Tyler’s been great all year. There’s a reason he’s the 10th Region player of the year. He commands the strike zone; he throws three or four different pitches every time. Ultimately, he commands the zone. He does a great job and he’s a competitor.” This was evident during a critical moment in the sixth inning when GRC had runners on first and second base. A key play from center fielder Jackson Bittner and catcher Camden Tiemeier preserved the shutout, leading to Schumacher striking out the final batter of the inning.
On the offensive side, Trip Mercurio excelled with three hits and made significant contributions defensively. “Just take it the opposite way,” Mercurio explained, crediting his coach for guiding his hitting approach throughout the season. With the team now focused on the finals, Schweitzer emphasized the importance of maintaining solid defense, noting that they committed only one error in the semifinal. Mercurio, a sophomore, highlighted the significance of this moment for the seniors, saying, “This means a lot to all of them. This could be their last game tomorrow. You never know.”
In the other semifinal, Montgomery County defeated Scott 8-5, marking their return to the regional final for the second consecutive year. Scott concluded its season with a record of 17-19. Coach Patrick Dragan expressed pride in his team's effort, despite the challenges they faced. “It’s a blast,” he said. “You get into this job for situations like this. I’m really proud of our kids. I hope these kids take this and remember this for the rest of their lives.”
